MOLD GUIDE
Signs of Mold in Your Home
The clearest clues are visible growth and evidence of excess moisture. A persistent musty odor can also justify looking for hidden dampness or mold.
Common clues
- Visible spotting or growth on building materials
- Musty or earthy odors
- Water stains or previous flooding
- Recurring condensation
- Damp wallboard, carpeting or other absorbent materials
- Leaks from plumbing, roofs or exterior water intrusion
Do you need a mold test?
Massachusetts DPH generally does not recommend routine environmental mold testing because there are no federal or state standards establishing a safe or unsafe amount for comparison. Visible mold and moisture conditions can be acted on directly.
